Kassu Aragaw one of the members of Rikecha Organic Vegetable Producers Association in Holeta town, Oromia region, described his organic work as follows:
“My association, Rikecha Organic Vegetable Producers Association, said farmer Kassu, “joined the organic farming project implemented by the Institute for Sustainable Development seven years ago.
Kassu also commented on how the project created market linkage opportunities in Addis Ababa for him and other farmers. He said “I am actively participating in an Organic Farmers’ Market Day by selling different types of organic vegetables and herbs. The Organic Farmers’ Market Day has helped me obtain more income, has transformed the livelihood of my family and that of members of the association.
Kassu said “by becoming an organic farmer we could change the fertility of the soil, increase productivity, feed our families healthy foods and transform our livelihood, all by taking advantage of the market day opportunity in Addis Ababa. We now have customers who regularly purchase our produce”.
Kassu told us that training received from ISD, plus in addition to the experience sharing, and particularly market linkage opportunities in Addis Ababa have been greatly appreciated.
In conclusion, Kassu said, “Bearing the label “organic” and undergoing training is not enough to be successful. Commitment and hard work are required. That is why I work hard!!”
